ORDER OF ENNEAD Makes Surprise Appearances At DEICIDE’s Italian Shows

For Italian metalheads who recently went to see death metal legends DEICIDE perform on the Total Metal Festival tour, they got even more than they bargained for. Fans were treated to a special double-barrelled assault as DEICIDE drummer Steve Asheim’s new band ORDER OF ENNEAD made a surprise appearance.

ORDER OF ENNEAD bassist Scott Patrick comments on the band’s unexpected performances: “Since DEICIDE was going to be in Italy, I decided to go hang out for the tour. When I brought it up, I was asked to bring a bass along and we would slide ORDER OF ENNEAD on a few of the dates. ORDER OF ENNEAD was able to play the Rome, Turin, and Bologna dates of the Total Metal Festival tour. We had a great time at each venue and were asked by the promoter to come back soon. We would like to thank Glen Benton for his help in making this happen.”

Check out the video below of ORDER OF ENNEAD performing the song “The Culling” at the September 13, 2008 show with DEICIDE in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

ORDER OF ENNEAD’s self-titled debut album was recorded at AudioHammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with the help of Mark Lewis (TRIVIUM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) and is due to be released by Earache Records on October 13 in Europe and November 11 in the USA, followed by widespread touring.

ALL SHALL PERISH’s ‘Awaken The Dreamers’ Lands On BILLBOARD Chart

“Awaken The Dreamers”, the third full-length album from Oakland, California-based extreme metallers ALL SHALL PERISH, sold just under 5,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 126. The follow-up to “The Price of Existence” was recorded once again at Castle Ultimate Studios in Oakland with producer Zack Ohren.

“Awaken The Dreamers” track listing:

01. When Life Meant More…
02. Black Gold Reign
03. Never…Again
04. The Ones We Left Behind
05. Awaken The Dreamers
06. Memories Of A Glass Sanctuary
07. Stabbing To Purge Dissimulation
08. Gagged, Bound, Shelved And Forgotten
09. Until The End
10. From So Far Away
11. Misery’s Introduction
12. Songs For The Damned

Drummer Matt Kuykendall previously stated about the new album: “We have never been a band to write the same record twice and we have never enjoyed records that are one single and 11 worse versions of the same song. This record is the most diverse thing we have done to date. Every song is different and brings something new to the overall experience of the CD. When you look back to all the classic records of our time, they are full of all kinds of different songs. ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ just wouldn’t be the same without ‘This Love’ and ‘Hollow’. Our record is a breath of fresh air in a scene that is turning stale.”

Finland’s HardcoreSounds.Net conducted an interview with Matt Kuykendall on September 11, 2008 at Nosturi in Helsinki. Watch the seven-minute chat below. Also available is video footage from the Helsinki concert.

ALL THAT REMAINS: ‘Overcome’ First-Week Sales Revealed

“Overcome”, the new album from Massachusetts metallers ALL THAT REMAINS, sold just under 29,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 16.

ALL THAT REMAINS recently filmed a video for the song “Two Weeks” with director Darren Doane (DEFTONES, UNEARTH, DARKEST HOUR).

Having recently wrapped up a stint on the Vans Warped Tour, ALL THAT REMAINS kicked off a co-headlining tour with TRIVIUM which will continue through mid-October before the band jumps aboard a full North American tour as direct support to IN FLAMES alongside GOJIRA and 36 CRAZYFISTS.

Headbanger’s Blog recently talked to ALL THAT REMAINS lead singer Phil Labonte about the eclectic songwriting on “Overcome”, the emphasis on melody and the band’s experience working with producer Jason Suecof. In the process, Labonte addressed the current economic climate, the basic code of morality mankind seems to have forgotten and the misconception that ALL THAT REMAINS is a Christian metal band. You can stream the interview below.

ALL THAT REMAINS‘ last album, “The Fall of Ideals”, has sold 176,000 copies in the United States since its July 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

BUCKCHERRY’s ‘Black Butterfly’ Cracks U.S. Top 10

BUCKCHERRY’s fourth studio album, titled “Black Butterfly”, has sold just under 47,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 8. The CD follows up 2006’s “15″, which marked a huge comeback for the band after it was left for dead in 2002. “15″ sold more than one million copies and produced several hit singles, with the song “Crazy Bitch” becoming one of the most popular ringtones ever. Although the band is now bigger than it was before its four-year hiatus, singer Josh Todd told The Pulse of Radio their values remain the same. “When we started out, I remember Keith (Nelson, guitarist) and I just saying that we had gotten to a point where just, like, we just wanted to make music that we were excited about,” he said. “It was just all about, like, ‘Let’s just go and enjoy ourselves.’ And we still have that philosophy today, you know, like we don’t want to overthink it and we don’t want to chase radio, you know, we just want to make the music that means something to us. And if it’s real to us, it’s gonna be real to everybody else.”

BUCKCHERRY came onto the scene in 1999 with its self-titled debut album, which went gold. But its 2001 sophomore effort, “Time Bomb”, was a sales disappointment, leading Todd and Nelson to put the band on ice until 2005.

Todd and Nelson are the only original members still in the group. During BUCKCHERRY’s hiatus they were involved with an early version of VELVET REVOLVER.

“Don’t Go Away” is the latest single from “Black Butterfly”. It follows up “Too Drunk…”

BUCKCHERRY Guitarist: ‘We Don’t Take Direction Very Well’

Stephen Centanni of LagniappeMobile.com recently conducted an interview with BUCKCHERRY guitarist Keith Nelson. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

LagniappeMobile.com: One thing that I think is so unique about your band is that you’ve been able to maintain your outlaw status and still get played on mainstream radio, which is rare these days. What is it about BUCKCHERRY that allows y’all to be outlaws and still get heard on the radio?

Keith: We don’t take direction very well, and we have a complete problem with authority. You know, I think we do things the way we want to do it, and that’s all we’re really concerned with. We’re concerned with the five of us being happy with the records that we make and the way we go about. We know that there’s a certain segment of the population that will go along with that. For those of them who don’t, well, f*ck ‘em!

LagniappeMobile.com: The new record, “Black Butterfly” is on the shelves after a year of production. What was it like trying to get this monster out?

Keith: It actually wasn’t that difficult. We came off the road last October, and we wrote a lot and kept writing and kept writing. The actual recording was fast. We did the record in 21 days, but the writing phase with pre-productions and rehearsals was a time consuming thing. All things considered, if we started in October, and this hit the shelves September 16, it’s not really all that long. We’re pretty happy with the way that process went.

LagniappeMobile.com: How do think the fans are going to react to the new record?

Keith: I think that anybody who was expecting us to play it safe and make the same record again is going to be sadly disappointed. I think that anybody that wants to hear a real rock-and-roll band make a real rock-and-roll record will be pleasantly surprised.

LagniappeMobile.com: I was watching the video for “Too Drunk…” the other day-the unedited one, I might add, and I kept noticing something different about some of the footage spliced in. Was that actual footage from backstage?

Keith: I don’t know exactly which version of that video that you’re referring to. There’s a couple of different of versions of that video floating around. I know that some of the folks at Playboy Lounge are handling some of the girls and some of the talent, so there’s that one floating around. There’s also a version that’s like us roaming around from behind the scenes stuff. So, there’s a couple of different ones out there, but all of them are great.

CHIMAIRA Selects Mixer For New Album

Cleveland, Ohio’s CHIMAIRA has tapped Chris “Zeuss” Harris to mix the band’s follow-up to 2007’s “Resurrection”, tentatively due in early 2009 via Ferret Music in the U.S. and an as-yet-undetermined label in the rest of the world (the band is no longer signed to Nuclear Blast, which released “Resurrection” in Europe).

Commented CHIMAIRA: “One of the cool things about being in a band is that you get the opportunity to work with people you admire and respect for many reasons, including the records they have helped shape. We had the chance to work with Colin Richardson and Andy Sneap on our other records. Now we are going to let our longtime friend Zeuss handle the mixing duties.

“Working with Zeuss on this album will bring a completely different vibe and we feel it will wind up being the heaviest-sounding CHIMAIRA record to date. We are not being cliché and saying, ‘This is our heaviest album ever!!!!’ but in terms of tones and power, we feel this guy is going to make the new record sound like an axe just hit you in the mouth.

Zeuss has worked with a lot of our friends and is responsible for some of the most brutal-sounding records out there. We are pumped.”

CHIMAIRA is currently recording the new CD with producer Ben Schigel. Ben previously worked with the band on the “This Present Darkness” (producer, engineer, mixer); “The Impossibility Of Reason” (producer, engineer); self-titled (producer, engineer); and “Resurrection” (drum tracking) albums.
CHIMAIRA has posted the third in a series of webisodes (see below) documenting the making of the band’s new album.

The group will enter Ante Up Audio in Cleveland on October 21 to begin laying down drums for the new CD. CHIMAIRA says, “This is the third time we will be using this studio for our drums. We first came here in 2005 when we tracked the self-titled record. We loved it so much that we made sure we came back at the end of 2006 for ‘Resurrection’. We are anxious to return.”

CHIMAIRA recently posted a previously unreleased song from the “Resurrection” sessions entitled “Kingdom Of Heartache” on its Facebook page.

The band released a digital-deluxe version of 2007’s “Resurrection” (Ferret Music) via iTunes. The iTunes-exclusive version of the album, which came out in June, includes two bonus tracks, “Kingdom of Heartache” and “Paralyzed”, as well as well as a video guitar lesson from the group’s renowned guitarist Rob Arnold. The lesson was taken from Arnold’s contribution to the Rock House Method instructional DVD series.

TAPROOT: ‘Our Long Road Home’ First-Week Sales Revealed

“Our Long Road Home”, the new album from the Michigan-based hard rock quartet TAPROOT, sold around 7,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 65.

Released through Velvet Hammer, the label founded by the management company of the same name (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, DEFTONES), the follow-up to 2005’s “Blue-Sky Research” features the following track listing:

01. The Path Less Taken
02. Hand That Holds True
03. Wherever I Stand
04. Be the One
05. Take It!
06. It’s Natural
07. As One
08. You’re Not Home Tonight
09. Footprints
10. Run To
11. Interlude
12. Karmaway

Working with producer Tim Patalan (SPONGE, LOVEDRUG), the band penned more than fifty songs for the album, twelve of which were recorded in a converted barn just a few minutes down the road from vocalist/guitarist Stephen Richards‘ home.

“Our Long Road Home” reveals a revitalized band with a broadened range and deepened perspective. The album combines the feral (“Take It”) with the grandiose (“Footprints”) while exploring themes of loss (“Be The One”), liberation (“Run To”) and the emotional carnage in-between. On tracks such as “Hand That Holds True” and smoldering lead single “Wherever I Stand”, TAPROOT blends iron-fisted backbeats, honeyed melodies and speaker-shattering guitars to thrilling effect.

After recording three albums for a major label, “Our Long Road Home” is TAPROOT’s first as an indie band, and as Richards tells it, that suits them just fine. “Budget cuts and political shifts cost us our support system at the old place,” he says. “When our A&R guy lost his job, we knew it was time for a change. A few years ago, that might’ve been a scary thing, but it’s a brand-new world out there now for bands like us. We no longer have to rely on a big record company to make things happen and that’s exciting. We made this record without the pressure of having to write four smash hit singles hanging over our heads and that was liberating. Of course,” he laughs, “there are a few songs on the album that could do really well on radio.”

With “Our Long Road Home”, TAPROOT is staying true to its roots, while keeping their grooves current and hearts open. “There’s a sense of energy and excitement about us that we haven’t felt since we released our first album,” says Richards. “We’re ready to hit the ground running.”

IN FLAMES To Release ‘Alias’ Digital Single

Swedish metallers IN FLAMES will release their new digital single, “Alias”, on Friday, September 26. The cover artwork for the single can be viewed below.

“Alias” is the second single from the band’s latest album, “A Sense Of Purpose”, which came out in April. The accompanying video, which can be viewed below, was filmed just outside Gothenburg, Sweden and was directed and produced by Patric Ullaeus (Revolver Film Company), who previously worked with the band on such videos as “Take This Life”, “My Sweet Shadow” and “The Quiet Place”.

Commented singer Anders Fridén: “Our aim with this video was to make a straight-up video with the feel/touch of our live shows to it! I think a lot of people who have seen us at the European festivals this summer will recognize themselves and maybe some of the people who will see us live this fall will recognize themselves from the video.

The video was shot in an old TV studio where a lot of famous Swedish TV shows have been recorded, just outside Gothenburg. It was shot in one, looooong, day but, at the same time, a very smooth one. I got the idea for this video from our live shows. I said, ‘Take that concept and incorporate that feeling into it.’ There is no real story or connection with the lyrics, just IN FLAMES doing our thing! Like I said, I think a lot of people who has seen us live the past year will recognize themselves in the video and also the people who will see us live in November/December will get the feel from the video.”

TESTAMENT Guitarist Says ‘The Ritual’ Album Was ‘Just A Big Compromise’

TESTAMENT members Eric Peterson (guitar) and Chuck Billy (vocals) recently spoke to the UK’s Terrorizer magazine (web site) about the accusations that they dampened down their sound in the early ’90s in order to reconnect dwindling audiences, who diverted their attentions up north to the growing grunge movement.

Eric: “We went the opposite way. That was about the time when ‘Low’ came out. Our record label wanted us to write something more alternative, but we went and wrote a song called ‘Dog Faced Gods’, which was more kind of death metal.”

Chuck: “‘The Ritual’ was on a path of its own. The record was actually written a lot heavier and thrashier, and at that time, Alex [Skolnick, guitar] was on tour with Stu Hamm doing some other gigs and coming back to listen to the songs we wrote. He was like, ‘I’m not playing over the thrash parts! We need to slow it down and get some straight-ahead beats.’ And when it did that, vocally, for me, it made it kind of boring because it’s just one straight path, and it really slowed everything down and broke up the dynamics we created originally.”

Eric: “The whole record was just a big compromise.”

Chuck: “We were on the way to parting ways with Alex at the time, and you could tell he wanted to do something else. He was in a band from when he was fifteen and left when he was 23 and he grew up on tour playing thrash metal, so he wanted to do different things. So when he went on the Stu Hamm tour it opened his eyes that there was other stuff out here. That record was a little compromised. But I think it would have been a more of a ‘thrash’ record if we had stuck to our guns and said, ‘No, we’re not going to change it.’ It would have been a different record, for sure.”

Eric: “It’s a good record for us though. I mean, we’ve had a lot of records that have come and gone. That one’s a lot more classic rock sounding, you know?!”

Chuck: “It was influenced a lot by the record label as well though. Because we had a lot of people asking, ‘Where’s the next single? Where’s the next video?’ And we had the big Atlantic Records behind us, and we were kind of listening to them and it was a comprising time for us. Especially the way the scene was changing, we were changing as well.”

Eric: “PANTERA came out with ‘Vulgar Display Of Power’, SEPULTURA came out with ‘Arise’, we came out with this. But we got success from it though. We were on the radio a lot. It’s just that we didn’t want to play ‘Return Of The Serenity’ live.”

Chuck: “It gave us a different exposure. The next record, the last record with Atlantic Records, that’s the point where they were dropping a lot of the metal bands, and we had one more obligation with them, so we thought, screw that we’re going to write heavier! Alex left the band and Louie [Clemente, drums] was gone, and we thought, fuck that, we’re going to be heavier now, and that’s when we did the ‘Low’ record ‘Dog Faced Gods’. And that opened up a whole new world with people writing in and saying, ‘That’s so different! You need to do more of that.’ And then came ‘Demonic’ and we went a little bit too over that top on that one, because I sang almost all death style. Then we did ‘The Gathering’, which kind of brought it all together.”

PSYCROPTIC: Darwin Show Postponed

Tasmanian tech-death masters PSYCROPTIC have been forced to postpone their previously announced October 17 concert in Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory, Australia, due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Commented PSYCROPTIC drummer Dave Haley: “Everything was done by our management team and ourselves to ensure that this show would go ahead. As an extreme metal band, to say that were majorly excited to be playing in Darwin, not just for the first time but at all, would be a massive understatement, definitely something we never thought would happen. PSYCROPTIC has always been as loyal to its fans as they are to it and we will make this up to our Darwin fans as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”

PSYCROPTIC recently uploaded another new track, “Ob(Servant)”, to its MySpace page. The song is the title cut of the group’s fourth album, “Ob(Servant)”, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 26 and in North America on October 14 via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2006’s “Symbols of Failure” was mixed and mastered by former MACHINE HEAD and SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader (DIVINE HERESY, GOJIRA) and was recorded once again by guitarist Joe Haley. The album will include a free bonus DVD featuring a studio diary as well as performance footage from a 2006 gig in Amsterdam, Netherlands and 2008 concert in Wellington, New Zealand. The free bonus DVD will run approximately 85 minutes.

Metal Injection recently posted an interview (see below) with vocalist Jason Peppiatt of PSYCROPTIC, filmed during the Summer Slaughter 2008 tour. Jason discusses the scene in Tasmania and Australia, the band’s first time being in America, writing the new album, “Ob(Servant)”, the physics of toilet flushing and more.

PSYCROPTIC’s third full-length album, “Symbols of Failure”, was released in February 2006 via Neurotic Records. The follow-up of 2003’s “The Scepter of the Ancients” marked the recording debut of Jason Peppiatt.

According to the site, the fight occurred after Khan’s appearance in Atlanta at the Highland Inn Lounge’s weekly Kirkwood Ballers Club open mic. Read all the details from Pitchfork.

Hinds was reportedly jumped following MASTODON’s performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. The CD will feature sharp spot printing throughout the layout and we’ve also planned a vinyl release of “Mainlining” (no date) with an entirely different layout than said CD version. MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD Hard At Work On New Album

After years of non-stop touring, New York hardcore activists MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD are currently recording their fourth CD, “Do No Resuscitate”, with Dean Baltulonis at Atomic Recording Company (SICK OF IT ALL, PAIN IT BLACK) for an early 2009 release on Trustkill Records.

Guitarist Justin Brannan said, “The new record is one part systems overload, one part tragedy and one part funeral for a Mexican bullfighter. We didn’t listen to anything recorded after 1995 while recording this thing. We didn’t set out to do anything but we wound up writing and recording a record that’s a giant fuck you to just about everyone involved in underground music today. We stripped it down, covered it in bleach and set it on fire. We employed a scorched earth policy which involved destroying anything that might be useful to the enemy while advancing through or withdrawing from the area or scene. We may do some shows or tour to promote this record, we may not. We have not broken up, and we never will. We’re doing what we want to do completely untethered to anyone or anything or any obligations or allegiance save for the five of us and maybe Geoff Silverman. We are unplugging the machine and letting it cool off. Let everyone else run around in circles for a while. We’re buying run flats. That said, I think people who’ve supported us in the past we will enjoy this record. We stripped it all down and just left the engine.”

MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD’s last album, “Merciless”, came out in September 2005 on Trustkill Records.

DISFEAR: Norwegian Dates Cancelled

DISFEAR — the Swedish “crust rock” outfit featuring former AT THE GATES/THE CROWN vocalist Tomas Lindberg and ex-ENTOMBED guitarist Ulf “Uffe” Cederlund — has issued the following update:

“We are sorry to announce that we are forced to cancel our imminent Norwegian dates due to our drummer Marcus Andersson having sustained a shoulder injured. The injury was caused by overexertion and Marcus will have to rest for 3-4 weeks to prevent further injury or permanent and more serious damage.

“We are really sad and disappointed for not being able to make it to Norway this time around. Cancelling these shows was a very hard decision and we apologize to organizers and everyone who was planning to attend the shows.

“We are looking into the possibility of moving the dates into the not-so-distant future.”

DISFEAR recently announced a number of European tour dates in support of its latest CD, “Live The Storm”. The band will begin this fall tour with a run of dates in Germany with fellow Swedes VICTIMS. From there, DISFEAR will join up with Massachusetts’ DOOMRIDERS for a two-week, 11-country trek.

Marcus Andersson commented on the upcoming tour: “Once again we team up with our brothers in DOOMRIDERS and hit the road. But this time on our side of the Atlantic! We’ve been looking forward to this for quite some time now and we’re stoked that it’s finally happening.”
